Contextual Influences

The Adelaide Secondary School of English is the only provider of intensive English study in subjects across the curriculum for permanent, temporary and overseas full fee paying students, 12 – 18 years of age. Students come from diverse cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds and intend to continue their education in South Australia.

Continuous and fluctuating enrolments, with groups of students enrolling each week and transferring to other educational providers at the end of each term requires staff to be in a constant state of administrative readiness.

The school's procedures cater for:
  • unpredictable enrolment dates and number of students
  • continuous assessment of the educational and social needs of new students
  • transition of students to other educational providers at the end of each term
Depending on their previous schooling and levels of English language proficiency, students can study at the school from 10 to 80 weeks. Students are assessed on arrival and placed in appropriate learning pathways and levels of English proficiency. Overseas full fee paying students can also attend short term cultural or study abroad courses.
